Mary - Good point, however it's important to note that jewelers can only lower the price to a point. It's definitely worth it to see if you can get them to lower your price below what you see online, but I don't know that we could get a 50% price cut in the store by haggling. Maybe, though.

I generally agree with shopping online for everything. I buy online whenever I can. For us, though, there are two kinds of stores, those where you can get a deal, and those where you can't. If you aren't possibly going to get a deal in the store, then we absolutely opt for online, but the categories of shopping where you can talk the salespeople down on a purchase, we tend to buy in store instead, because you can't talk a website down : )

The categories of stores where my husband always walks away with a lower price than the ticket are mostly obvious... Car Dealerships, furniture and mattress stores, major appliance stores, the list goes on. These are stores where the salespeople are authorized to lower their prices and add benefits to a certain point, then the managers can lower it even further. I thought it was worth mentioning to keep in mind that jewelers do fall into this category. If you are the kind of person who is uncomfortable talking someone into a better deal, then obviously, the internet might still be your best bet, but you can usually talk jewelers into lowering their prices substantially, adding protection plans and even throwing in bonus pieces (earrings, etc) Especially at times like now, when the economy isn't exactly encouraging jewelry sales, the jewelers are anxious to make sales and willing to bargain if you push them hard enough. Again, it's all a matter of what you're comfortable with, because I realize that not everyone is, but it's definitely something to keep in mind when shopping for any kind of jewelry.

I totally agree! My husband bought my engagement and wedding rings both from Blue Nile. We were very happy with the quality and price. Great customer service too.

The best deal was from overstock.com. They have a great selection and great prices. My husband really wanted a simple titanium band. We shopped online together for his and ended up only paying $17!
