Target brand paper towels are great. I switched from Bounty and have never looked back. My grocery store's brand items taste just as good (often times, better) than the name brands. I especially prefer the grocery store brand canned green beans to the name brand, and they're almost half the price!

One thing I'd add is that not all generics are created equal. For example, I love Target's generic paper towels, but other generic paper towels are worthless.

Another thing you have to watch with generic drugs is that the dosage is the same. Generics might cost four times less but you need to take twice as much--still worth doing, but you need to know to do it.

Just wanted to add a note about medicines... I've found that for adults it's true that generics do often work just fine, but I've also found across the board that with the kids stuff (cough syrup, fever reducers, etc) the brand name is always worth the expense. I've noticed that the motrin/tylenol works faster and better, and since your stockpile of children's motrin is what you'll turn to when it's 4am and someone suddenly spikes a fever of 104, you don't want to be waiting for it to work and wondering if it will. Don't get me wrong, the generics do work, but for example, if we're talking about that 104 degree fever, the motrin, for me, works in 20 minutes and would likely bring the fever to a 99 or so, whereas the generic might take more like 40 minutes to work and leave a fever in the high 100s or so hanging around. Just my experience.

We hardly ever buy cleaning products as we use a lot of vinegar, baking soda and essential oils which makes cleaning really cheap and safe.

For food, local/organic produce is a must for us so we participate in CSA's and farmer's markets. We also participate in food coops so we can buy high quality foods in bulk or share with other families and get a reduced rate.
