I'm of the school of thought that you only insure against catastrophic expenses and self-insure the rest. So for your laptop it would be more prudent to have a fund for repairing things, started by what it would cost to pay someone else to insure it. After the nightmare experiences I've had with companies trying to get them to honor their extended warranties etc. I'm even more convinced that if you self-insure against the little things you come out ahead. GE wants us to give them 1000 to insure all our appliances for another year. I'd rather keep that dough in an account.

For my most important documents, I use a free service called Dropbox (https://www.getdropbox.com/). It's supposed to be used to sync files across computers easily, but it also keeps a backup online, which is why I like it. Every time I make a change to a file, it copies that change online, or next time I'm online.

Anyway, it's only 2 GB, which isn't much (you can pay for more space), but it's more than enough for my most important documents.
