FuzziBunz Hemp One Size diaper review

by Karen on February 7, 2011

Click through to read my thoughts on the FuzziBunz one-size hemp pocket diaper.

Aside from the week that we were packing and moving, I’ve used cloth diapers exclusively since Judah was about three weeks old. Honestly, cloth diapers have worked great for us, and I actually prefer them over disposables. We seem to have fewer leaks in cloth, I feel good knowing that I’m not adding diapers to the landfills, and we’re not spending a fortune on something that my baby is going to poop on anyway.

We exclusively use prefold cloth diapers and diaper covers. For those of you who aren’t familiar with cloth diaper jargon, that means we use traditional rectangular diapers like you probably imagine when you think of cloth diapers. The diaper is fastened around him, and a waterproof cover snaps over the diaper to prevent leaks.

This week, I tried a pocket diaper for the first time, because FuzziBunz sent me one of their hemp one size pocket diapers to review. Pocket diapers are built more like disposables only you wash the whole thing after each wear. They come with a pocket and an absorbent insert. Pocket diaper fans find them more convenient than prefolds because there’s no folding or fastening involved — you just stuff the insert into the pocket and the diaper is ready to go. Because they fasten on like a disposable, they’re usually easier for babysitters and sometimes even dads to use.

The first thing I noticed about these diapers is how soft and comfortable on baby’s skin they feel. Prefolds are much stiffer than the fleece-y microfiber fabric used on these diapers, and I’m sure they felt nicer against his skin.

At first, I was overwhelmed by the size adjustment instructions. Instead of snaps in the front like most one-size covers and diapers, FuzziBunz have adjustable elastic. Once I looked closely at the elastic, it made more sense and was actually pretty easy. Because the elastic is inside the diaper, this method seems to cut back on some of the bulkiness of one-size diapers on a smaller baby (like my 12-pound son). The adjustable elastic also hugged his legs tighter than snap-adjust diapers, which seems to protect better against leaks.

I love the adjustable elastic, especially since my son is so small. I prefer one-size diapers because they’re more economical than sized diapers (one set fits your baby from 7 or 8 to 30 pounds or more). The downside is when your baby is on the smaller end of the spectrum, the diapers are bulky and can make baby look like he has a bit of a bubble butt. That isn’t as big of a problem with the adjustable elastic sizing.

Overall, I have nothing bad to say about the diaper’s function or its look. The one I received is vanilla colored. It’s cute, trim, and I didn’t have any problems with leaks.

Pocket diapers require you to reach into the pocket and pull out the soaked insert before washing. Dirty diapers don’t bother me at all, and I have no problem handling them. But this may be a downside if you’re squeamish about touching wet diapers.

I only have one negative thing to say, and it’s a big one for me. The main reason I choose prefolds and diaper covers is price, and since this is a personal finance blog, I have to be honest: if FuzziBunz hadn’t sent me this diaper for free, I doubt I ever would have paid for one myself. They retail at $21.95. That’s a lot of money to pay for something for your baby to poop on! The diapers have to be washed after every wear, which means you’d need to buy 24-36 of these diapers if you wanted to wash every 2-3 days. They work wonderfully and seem very comfortable for baby, but at that price, they better be!

For comparison, prefold diapers cost $1.50-$2 each plus $10-$13 for covers that can be reworn several times in a day if they haven’t been soiled too much. I just couldn’t justify spending the money necessary to use these fancy diapers exclusively.

I know many people (even frugal people) who love using pocket diapers. They don’t want to deal with the hassle of folding and fastening prefold cloth diapers. If you’re one of them, then I definitely recommend FuzziBunz one-size diapers. They’re easy to use, extremely comfortable for baby, and they work great. I think I’m just a little too cheap to use them exclusively myself, but I did enjoy trying one out!

Disclosure: I received one free FuzziBunz hemp one-size diaper for this review. I did not receive any other compensation. All opinions are honest and my own.

I think having a couple of pocket diapers is handy for baby sitters and people changing your kid’s diapers. And for the diaper bag! But yeah, a whole stash of ‘em? Too spendy.

Oh and pockets are great for when babies are older and less tolerant of diaper changes (especially before naptime) and you need it to be AQAP!

Good call, Kacie! I have two pockets and an all in one. I’m definitely hanging on to them!

I ended up making my own diapers! Pretty easy to do, I did get frustrated with them at times, but they end up looking good.
